Decks and Sheds
Even before people in Lakeshore began moving from tents and sleeping in their vehicles into FEMA issued campers, we began building sheds and decks. The sheds provide much needed storage space, not found in the campers. The decks with stairs give a more stable entryway, especially for the elderly. Lakeshore Baptist Church, with the help of volunteer labor, built hundreds of decks and sheds for Lakeshore residents. We have now turned most of our efforts to rehabs and rebuilds.
Top-Down Rehabs
Every home in Lakeshore suffered massive damage in Hurricane Katrina. Not one house survived unscathed. With hard work, we can salvage many of these homes by replacing the roof, gutting them down to the studs, hanging new sheet rock, laying new flooring, and renovating the structure for habitation.
Bottom-up Rebuilds
Many other homes suffered irreparable damage. The massive storm surge sucked almost everything south of the railroad tracks into the gulf leaving nothing more than concrete slabs or pilings. Many houses left somewhat standing, north of the tracks, proved beyond repair. We bulldozed the ruined remains and need to rebuild these homes.
Food Distribution Center
With their homes destroyed, gulf coast residents face a long road of recovery. Our food distribution center provides the community with assistance with nonperishable food products. The free “store” puts groceries on hundreds of FEMA camper tables in our area.
Special Projects
Periodically we have special events and projects that call for your help. Keep your eye on our blog, especially the special projects category, for updates.
